the name that keeps coming up is Ernie Hawkins
I
drove all the way from College Park, MD to Columbus, Ohio just to
get your CD and to see you. I think your recording of the Rev. Gary
Davis Cocaine Blues if the most beautiful song I've heard. Darren,

Ernie Hawkins is one of the worlds foremost practitioners of
the old Piedmont blues and ragtime styles of guitar playing.
His
acoustical style is laced with a deep, sensuous optimism that evokes
an earthy, down-home spirituality."

I
don't know how many people are in the group I call the Reverend Gary Davis
Chowder and Marching Society. I could reel off a hundred names, some famous,
most of them not. They have two things in common: studying Rev. Gary Davis
works and picking their butts off. Now, most of these people are my friends,
and like other groups of friends, we tend to scandalize whoever is out
of earshot. That's right, we talk about them behind their back: who's
doing what, who just released a new CD, who plays the best, that sort
of thing. Well, Ive had a lot of these conversations, cause
I got a lot of friends, and I couldn't exactly give you a frequency count,
but Ill tell you one thing: the name that keeps coming up is Ernie
Hawkins. Hes the one, we either want to break his fingers, or break
our own. Ernie Hawkins. Remember that. We aint no slouches. Ernie
Hawkins.

Acoustic CD Pick of the Month: Blues Advice, Ernie Hawkins Ernie Hawkins
is a product of the blues revival of the 1960s. His playing
is extraordinary, clean, imaginative and soulful, as is the material
hes recorded. His leadoff cut, Arthur Blind Blakes Police
Dog Blues, displays great guitar invention, as do all 15 stellar
tracks on this CD. He also pays homage to Rev. Gary Davis by recording
four of his songs. His vocals wont knock you over, but they
are appropriate for the music. If you want to hear some great East
Coast Piedmont, finger style, acoustic blues this is a CD you should
have in your collection.

I
have studied for the past 25 years…I doubt I'll ever achieve the fluency
and freedom of expression you have. Just wanted to let you know how
blown away I was by your playing and I hope to see you again some
day.
